Welcome the Whales Festival

April 8 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Celebrating the Gray Whales

Crowd watches the start of the Welcome the Whales Parade in Langley Washington

The “Welcome the Whales Parade” heads down down First Street.

“Welcome the Whales Day” is Langley’s off-beat celebration of our ultimate spring-breakers, the gray whales.  Their round-trip each year between Mexico’s Baja and the waters off Alaska is an amazing story of how these creatures live.  Each spring, some, on their way from Mexico to Alaska, stop in Puget Sound to feed off of ghost shrimp found in the shallow water surrounding our islands.

The day is one-part parade, one-part silly fun, and one-part education.  The parade through downtown Langley is slightly unconventional, with people dressed as ghost-shrimp, whales, and all manner of wildlife.  But other events, including lectures, offer a more thoughtful and serious view of the gray whales.

The newly expanded Langley Whale Center downtown, operated by the Orca network,  is sure to be a busy place that day, as well.
