Dissent at Karlson/Gray Gallery
It seems like America has never been so fractious, never have our passions run so high. There’s something in the air--something that is making us a little more argumentative. We asked many of Karlson/Gray’s artists as well as some friends to try to capture the spirit of the times in a show we call Dissent. The result was everything from in-your-face political messages to swirling, troubled landscapes. The show also features works, both on film and in mixed-media, from filmmaker Richard Evans.

The Open Door Gallery + Coffee at Historic Bayview Cash Store Exhibits Jeanne-ming Brantingham's New Paintings
Whidbey Island residents and visitors now have the unique opportunity to see new portraits by Jeanne-ming Brantingham, currently on exhibit at the Open Door Gallery + Coffee at Bayview Corner. Jeann-ming grew up in Taiwan, a member of the third generation of expatriates living in Asia. Her great-grandmother arrived in Shanghai in 1896 from Ohio as a Quaker missionary doctor. Jeanne-ming spent her formative years living in and working on the island of Taiwan.
Jeanne-ming, always a portrait painter, began experimenting with various styles and media after she moved to Whidbey Island in 1995, her first experience living in America. Unbearably homesick, she began painting portraits of her childhood neighbors and friends to ease the distance. The intricate details of her friends' stories and the rich texture of their lives are a continual source of inspiration.
"Our family had a mission on Wu Fung Street in the southern town of Chai Ye which was devastated by an earthquake when I was aged seven. Many of the old houses and ways of life changed after the earthquake, but to me the biggest loss was that of our common use of a water pump located right in the middle of the street. I had loved to wash our dishes at that pump in the evenings while "eaves dropping" on our neighbors chattering over their sons and daughters. I came to know all the comings and goings of our neighborhood, the gossip and expressed longings, fears, and anxieties of the families who lived near our mission. The older I become and the more I paint, the more I long for the time before the earthquake when I could observe my neighbors while still remaining an "anonymous child". My paintings are of my neighbors of that time. I hope you will become as endeared to them as I am." Jeanne-ming Brantingham

The Ebey's Forever Conference will feature lectures, workshops and field trips presented, hosted and facilitated by the leading and compelling voices in sustainability, historic preservation, agriculture, education, interpretation, and other disciplines.

Come explore the magic onstage as the timeless classic is performed by local talent and directed by Rusty Hendrix, at the Whidbey Playhouse
Scott Arnold a Coupeville senior prepared for his role as Peter Pan by watching every version of the movie on the market. His hold nothing back approach makes him irresistable to watch. His energy and acrobatics are a pleasure to watch. Great acting by all, Allen Young, Lisa Sparks, Austin Hendrix, to name a few. While your eyes have trouble deciding what to focus on next, the story and the wholesome, lovely nature ofit, pulls at your heart.
Very inspiring for young audiences since 29 of the actors are children. Top performances and imaginative sets makes this a 'must see'

Almost broke, the Soapbox Theatre Company is having a dickens of a time with their annual production of A Christmas Carol. Tiny Tim is a bit old, Marley keeps getting his chains tangled in the scenery, and there is an inspector from the NEA expected any minute. When an inept new actor arrives, the stage is set for a major case of mistaken identity – with horrifying and hilarious results! Part Noises Off, part Waiting for Guffman, this sidesplitting hit is sure to be the funniest show you'll see this winter!
