A Whidbey Island holiday tradition returns to South Whidbey for the fifth year, as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County presents its annual Festival of Trees Gala and Auction. This entertaining formal event, featuring uniquely decorated trees and wreaths for auction, benefits children in the community allowing them to be matched in one-to-one relationships with positive role-models through the nonprofit organization. Nationally, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been the leader in one-to-one mentoring for more than 100 years. On Whidbey Island, the organization has more than 11 years with proven success in creating positive friendships that benefit children, volunteers, families, schools and our entire community. For years, dedicated tree decorators have created unique styles, which have continued to bring joy to the buyers for years to come. The Festivals of Trees is a community celebration designed to brighten the holiday season while brightening the futures of children, organizers said. All funds go directly to children’s services. Other Festival of Tree events include the public tree and wreath viewing from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 5 at the Useless Bay Golf & Country Club in Freeland.

With the generous support and cooperation of four exceedingly charming Coupeville households, Island County Historical Society (ICHS) Museum is hosting their 2009 Holiday Home Tour. This year’s Holiday Home Tour will begin with a warm welcome at the Museum and features the Aleck & Susie Kettle House (currently owned and restored by Coleen and Rudy Parhaniemi ) and the Fullington House (now owned and re-restored by Gay Santos), both historic homes are located near Coupeville’s Town Park. Additionally, long time friends of the Museum, Maury & Charlotte Christensen, will open their holiday themed Madrona Way Coupe de Villa B&B. We have also added a special Twist for the willing -- join a party in progress on Krueger Street, one of the most beautifully lit streets in Coupeville. This leg of your tour is sponsored by the ICHS Board of Trustees and will be held at the home of Joe Walck & Jackie Feusier. Generous hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be offered. This house was built for wheelchair accessibility by Clifton View Homes ten years ago. All four homes are within walking distance of the Museum. Let the lights of the season and a little help by the weather guide your way.
Bookings are limited. Make your reservations at the Museum or by calling the Museum. Donation is $20 per person.
