A panoramic slide show by Don Baldwin, noted impersonator of environmentalist John Muir, will be presented in three Whidbey Island venues. John Muir is recognized as one of America's most significant and influential environmentalists. Founder of the Sierra Club, Muir challenged the nation to love, enjoy, and preserve its natural treasures. Don Baldwin, a retired clergyman, was appointed to serve as Resident Minister in Yosemite National Park. His love of nature and his skills as a photographer led him to develop an entertaining and compelling presentation of Yosemite and the Sierras, while taking on the persona of Muir.
Spectacular scenery comes alive on a twenty-seven foot wide triple screen, using six projectors and stereo music to dramatize the inspiring message of environmental stewardship.
"An Evening with John Muir" will raise funds to support Saratoga Community Housing, a nonprofit community land trust affordable housing project formed one year ago. Working with Habitat for Humanity, three families have moved into new homes and a fourth will be renovated and ready for occupancy in the next 60 days.
All programs start at 7:00 pm and last 90 minutes. Families are encouraged to attend. Donations of $10 for adults and $15 for families are encouraged

The Open Door Gallery + Coffee at Historic Bayview Cash Store Exhibits Jeanne-ming Brantingham's New Paintings
Whidbey Island residents and visitors now have the unique opportunity to see new portraits by Jeanne-ming Brantingham, currently on exhibit at the Open Door Gallery + Coffee at Bayview Corner. Jeann-ming grew up in Taiwan, a member of the third generation of expatriates living in Asia. Her great-grandmother arrived in Shanghai in 1896 from Ohio as a Quaker missionary doctor. Jeanne-ming spent her formative years living in and working on the island of Taiwan.
Jeanne-ming, always a portrait painter, began experimenting with various styles and media after she moved to Whidbey Island in 1995, her first experience living in America. Unbearably homesick, she began painting portraits of her childhood neighbors and friends to ease the distance. The intricate details of her friends' stories and the rich texture of their lives are a continual source of inspiration.
"Our family had a mission on Wu Fung Street in the southern town of Chai Ye which was devastated by an earthquake when I was aged seven. Many of the old houses and ways of life changed after the earthquake, but to me the biggest loss was that of our common use of a water pump located right in the middle of the street. I had loved to wash our dishes at that pump in the evenings while "eaves dropping" on our neighbors chattering over their sons and daughters. I came to know all the comings and goings of our neighborhood, the gossip and expressed longings, fears, and anxieties of the families who lived near our mission. The older I become and the more I paint, the more I long for the time before the earthquake when I could observe my neighbors while still remaining an "anonymous child". My paintings are of my neighbors of that time. I hope you will become as endeared to them as I am." Jeanne-ming Brantingham

Third Annual Artists' Yard Sale, sponsored by Seagrass Gallery on Camano Island.
Become one of the many artists and/or collectors at this year’s Third Annual Seagrass Gallery Artists' Yard Sale. Held Rain or Shine this event draws patrons from far and wide looking for deals on original art as well as artists looking for supplies. This year the popular event invites collectors to purchase a space to sell “Downsized Art”.
“Every day someone comes into the gallery, said Doris Platis, Director of Seagrass Gallery, wanting to sell or even to give away art that just does not fit their new home or new lifestyle. Many people want to replace their art with some of the work created by the many talented North West artists who live on Camano and in Stanwood. There is just no place to do this. For Shoppers, the Artists’ Yard sale is a wonderful place to find a fantastic deal on “pre-owned fine art”. “
A 10 x 10 space at the event goes for $25 for all three days, and this money is donated to the Seagrass Gallery Scholarship Fund intended to kindle the creativity in young artists 12-15 years of age. Spaces go quickly. And, you are contributing to a great cause; Perhaps your contribution will start a young Picasso on the path to illuminating the art world.”

In August, Artworks Gallery features the warm and vibrant landscape and native animal paintings of Rainy Lindell and the equally earthy elemental wood and metal sculptures of Dan Freeman.
Artworks Gallery is a co-operative enterprise of Whidbey Island artists working in a variety of media. At Artworks Gallery you’ll find a lively and inviting display that changes on a regular basis. Art in the gallery is the product of juried selection and is produced at the highest standards of quality -- the primary reason that Artworks has attracted a loyal, and geographically diverse, customer base.
Visitors to Greenbank Farm will find a wonderful combination of good art (multiple galleries), good food (an excellent café and cheese shop) and good wine (a fun tasting room/retail shop), all in a setting of exceptional scenic beauty.

Long before the printing press was invented, there were printmakers--artists who worked by hand with wood or stone to produce images. True printmaking is little changed since then, still hand- made by artists using anything from linoleum to acid-etched plates to produce images filled with subtle surprises.
Karlson/Gray has gathered together some of our favorite Northwest
printmakers for our September show, which will showcase the vision,
ingenuity and skill of the practitioners of this age-old art.
The show will feature original hand-made prints on paper, clay and
fiber by Anne Belov, Francy Blumhagen, Buffy Cribbs, Diane Divelbess,
Bridget Fischer, Paula Gill, Carys Hamer, Joyce May, Rebecca Meloy, Bruce
Morrow and Sandra Whiting.

The Rob Schouten Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new magic realist paintings by Seattle artist William Fahey. "I delight in painting impossible things with an earth-bound naturalism," says Fahey, "My work expresses my personal pursuit of meaning through mythology, world religion and the pre-history of humankind. There I have found rich symbols with which to work."
"Animals often appear in my images," Fahey continues, "They speak of the earth, spirit, power, as well as our own human nature and position in the natural world. In my work, I'm trying to point to the unseen, to create a sense of newness and mystery, to hint at deep experiences and encourage their exploration."

The Open Door Gallery + Coffee at Historic Bayview Cash Store Exhibits Mark Fessler’s sculpture and Liza vonRosenstiel’s oil paintings November 3-29, 2009. The Opening Reception is November 7th, 5:30pm-8:00pm.
These two artists have taught together since 2002 through Coyote Central creating public works with middle school students in Seattle’s Central District each summer.
Mark Fessler began carving in his grandfather’s shop in northwest Iowa at age ten. Over the years, he was self-taught in stone carving as well. In 1979 he began using cast, forged and fabricated metals in conjunction with wood and stone. Since then there has been an ongoing dialogue of forms and materials with frequent use of the salvaged and reworked. Fessler has taught and exhibited extensively in many regions of the United States.
Liza vonRosenstiel’s oil paintings are inspired by the trees, sky, and water of Whidbey Island, combined with the stories that make up daily life- with all their complexity and mystery. Until two years ago, Liza lived and worked in Seattle and on Whidbey Island for 30 years. Her paintings have been widely exhibited both regionally and nationally.

Art in the Café welcomes Gayle Watkins. Gayle paints because it challenges her artistic abilities. She started painting in 1980, while living in Kenai, Alaska, just on a whim to see how well she could do. Her favorite paintings are landscapes and seascapes of places that hold personal meaning for her. Her goal is to capture light, create depth and to invite the viewer into her world. She combines the use of brushstrokes and the palette knife to give her paintings a richer look.
