Au Sable faculty member Joe Sheldon will lead a discussion/presentation on his recently completed green home. Co-presenting with Dr. Sheldon will be award-winning green designer/builder Ted Clifton of Clifton View Homes and Kelly Keilwitz of Whidbey Sun and Wind: Renewable Energy Systems.
The home has a HERS Index rating of .32 and is a finalist (top 15) for the 2009 national Energy Value Housing Award and the 2009 Green Builder of the Year Award. The house received two of the top awards (most innovative design and landscaping) in the September Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) Built Green Home Tour.

Hosted by The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB), this year’s event will take place off the shores of Cama Beach State Park instead of next door Camano Island State Park. So, if you fancy the idea of taking to the waves come and join us on Saturday, May 9th, 2009. Weather permitting; the event will take place between 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, with the last boarding at 3:00 pm.
As in previous years, tall ship The Adventuress, along with a number of smaller sailing craft, will welcome budding sailors on board. Come dressed for the weather, as it can be colder on the water. Rides are offered on a first come, first served basis, and vary in length depending on the size of the vessel; trips on The Adventuresslasting up to an hour. Sign-ups begin at 10:00 am in the Boatman’s House, just South of the main Boathouse at Cama.

Sound Waters, held each year on the 1st Sat. in February, provides a one day university for all to help the public learn about a wide variety of topics related to the appreciation and stewardship of our environment and marine resources. Year after year, it is the largest public gathering held in Island County for marine, nearshore and environmental education. Join the Friends of Camano Island Parks members on a guided community walk through Cama Beach State Park. The walk will include the Cranberry Lake Trail, Welcome Center loop and beach. Total mileage will be 3.5 miles with some up and down portions. Shuttle vehicles will return walkers to the parking area. Walk takes place rain or shine. Wear appropriate clothes and sturdy shoes or boots. Meet at Ivy Road and Dry Lake Road junction. Access Dry lake Road from Elger Bay Road north of Elger Bay Elementary School or Monticello Road, which intersects West Camano Road and Elger Bay Road. Parking is on the Ivy Road cul-de-sac. Camano Island Walking Trails booklets are available at the Camano Chamber Kiosk, TJ Bucks, and Coastal Community Bank on Camano.

CWB at Cama Beach will host a campus clean-up weekend April 16-18. From Friday evening to Sunday afternoon we will be working on a variety of projects from building bunk beds to sanding boats. But we won't work too hard; there will be a party with refreshments on Saturday night and livery hours on Sunday afternoon. Not from the area? Not a problem. CWB has reserved several cabins for volunteers to rent.

(All ages, youth must be accompanied by an adult) Get out of your shell! We will lead an informational and hands-on workshop on clamming in our area. Learn about gear, harvesting regulations, where to go, and practical how-to lessons. We’ll end the event with an old fashioned clam bake (we will provide the preharvested clams). You’ll create and take home your own homemade & recycled clam measuring tool and yummy recipes for serving up your finds. Each attendee will need weather appropriate clothing, shoes you can get muddy, a water bottle, a bucket and small shovel or hand cultivator for each person wanting to harvest
clams. Limited space available, register by April 9th. $5
*Fee: You will also need to purchase a clam license. $10.18 for an adult one-day clamming license, less if you purchase it online (at least 10 days in advance) at www.fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov. It’s only a little more for the annual license. Licenses are available at Sebo’s, Jim’s Hardware and Ace Hardware. Children under the age of 15 do not need a fishing license.

Fort Ebey State ParkCentral Whidbey, Coupeville, Whidbey Island Fort Ebey State Park, a 645-acre camping park on Whidbey Island, was originally built as a coastal defense fort in World War II. Concrete platforms mark the gun locations. The park has three miles of saltwater shoreline on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, a freshwater lake for fishing, and miles of hiking and biking trails.
