Whidbey Island's very own Saratoga Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce the first set of concerts of the expanded 2008-2009 season. Under the musical direction of Maestro Legh W. Burns, the Traveling to Scotland concerts on October 6 and 7 will feature the sounds of the Scottish Highlands and Islands with Mendelssohn's "Hebridean Overture, Op. 26 - Fingal's Cave", and the delightfully engaging "Four Scottish Dances" of Malcolm Arnold.
A highlight of the concert will be special guest soloist, Randolph Kelly, performing the West Coast premiere of Michigan-based composer Braxton Blake's 1997 Viola Concerto (reconstruction based on pieces by J.S. Bach). Mr. Kelly is the principal violist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and will be accompanied by the Saratoga Chamber Orchestra, including his sister, Roxallanne Medley, SCO Concertmaster and local Coupeville resident. "This is a terrific opportunity for us to share the stage and make music together" Medley says. "Our careers have been separate for over 50 years. We are thrilled to finally be playing together, especially on Whidbey Island, a place loved by both of us."
Tickets are $20/$18/$15 and available for the Coupeville concert at bayleaf in Coupeville and Oak Harbor.

Celebrating and exploring a rural working community. The Ebey's Forever Conference is for all who want to understand the history of the Ebey Reserve and look at it's future.
More than 30 years ago local residents and committed citzens came together to protect Ebey's Prairie from development. This pioneer spirit and vision continues to be a part of the working rural community we have today.
The Ebey's Forever Conference will feature lectures, workshops and field trips presented, hosted and facilitated by the leading and compelling voices in sustainability, historic preservation, agriculture, education, interpretation, and other disciplines.

The famous Telegraph racing canoe returns to the Island County Historical Museum on Wednesday, July 22, about noon.
The Telegraph, carved at Swinomish in1906 by Charlie Edwards, was once described as“…the fastest canoe on Sound waters.” For almost three decades, it was the canoe to beat during the annual summer races, and it dominated the competition from local tribes, as well as those from British Columbia. In 1929, the town of Coupeville began hosting the International Indian War Canoe Race. Six years later, the Telegraph retired from active racing. The Swinomish gave the canoe to Wiley Hesselgrave of Coupeville in recognition of his founding the Coupeville races, for his avid support of Indian canoe racing, and for the kindness showed the participants
The Telegraph eventually became part of the Island County Historical Museum’s collection, where it is cared for and displayed in front of the museum along with other classic Indian racing canoes such as the Elson and the Flying Cloud.
In May 2008, the Island County Historical Museum loaned the Telegraph to Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, for their year-long exhibit, World of the Shipwright. On July 22, members of the Edwards family will escort the Telegraph back to Coupeville. On the journey home, the Telegraph will be brought through the Swinomish Reservation in LaConner, at about 10am, where a blessing ceremony will be conducted, then she’ll proceed to Coupeville, where she will be placed back with her canoe companions, and into a newly-restored canoe shed.

The Battlefield Band. A Scottish traditional music group Founded in Glasgow in the 1970s. The band is noted for its combination of bagpipes with other instruments, and its mix of traditional songs and tunes with new material. For a mainly instrumental and traditional band, the presence of electric keyboards is unusual but even more unusual is the absence of percussion. Every album revives some well-researched, long-dead Scottish songs and tunes as well as modern compositions (often original ones). The music ranges from the usual drinking, friendship and hard times to history, geography and politics. It is one of the most well-travelled folk bands of the past 20+ years.

The Island County Historical Museum is featuring a temporary exhibit titled “Glory Days – from Sandlots to Super Bowls”, featuring local and national sports memorabilia. The exhibit centerpiece is a life-sized carved wooden baseball pitcher from the early 1900’s. As a Boston Red Sox player, he likely began his “career” as a cigar store attraction in Boston, but was discovered by a local collector in Southern California, and now calls Coupeville home! Also featured are vintage sports cards, football and baseball gear, rare autographs, posters, and a vast assortment of photos of local sports teams, including the Oak Harbor Oaks, and the Coupeville Sprouts, all from the early part of the 1900s. The exhibit is part of the “Community Collections” series.

Hugo Helmer’s Accordion Band is the topic of discussion for the Island County Museum’s latest “Rural Recollections” program. Hugo’s Accordion Band was established in 1935, based out of Mount Vernon, and was famous not only for their great sounding accordion ensemble, but because of the fact they marched!
No longer associated with Helmer’s Music Stores, several former members of the early accordion bands – still playing together as “Hugo’s Accordion Band” will join their fellow musicians for a fun program at Coupeville’s Recreation Hall, at Coveland and NW Alexander Streets in Coupeville’s quaint downtown. Their enjoyable old-time accordion music is featured, and will be complemented by a nostalgic slide presentation and oral interviews with band members, who will share memories of the bands formative years. The program will be conducted and recorded by the Island County Museum, as part of an oral history-gathering project.
All are invited to come and enjoy the program, and are asked to participate in a “dessert potluck” for light refreshments. No admission fee, but donations greatly appreciated.

With ferry and bridge connections close to the Seattle metropolitan area, you can reach either island in under an hour. Accessible and beautiful, getting to Whidbey and Camano Islands is a scenic part of your vacation trip, however you get there.
