There's a chill in the air, the leaves are falling, and dogs all across Whidbey are wagging their tails just a little more impatiently. And you might wonder, why? You guessed it. The Mutt Strut dog parade and costume contest is just around the corner!
This year's prize categories are: best dog and owner costume combo, best trick, best dog costume, and best celebrity dog.
Ever-ebullient Jim Freeman emcees this menagerie while our literary panel of judges takes carefully crafted notes of your creativity and élan. You'll be dressing to impress Drew Campion, Molly Cook, Sue Frause, Elisabeth George, and Janice O'Mahony, led by MuttStrutJudgeforLife Emily Berg. You're gonna' have to be on your game!
All this dog on fun happens on Saturday, October 25, 11 am - 3 pm. Register for the Mutt Strut beginning at 12:30. The parade starts at 1:30 sharp.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
It's also Apple Day, so Bayview Farm & Garden will be hosting their spectacular apple tasting station. The Bayview Farmer's Market has all sorts of goodies planned. There's mask making in the Cash Store. And Ro Purser and Neil Brown are back this year to play bluesy, wistful, gritty, and heartfelt tunes about living large and loving hard.

Hosted by The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB), this year’s event will take place off the shores of Cama Beach State Park instead of next door Camano Island State Park. So, if you fancy the idea of taking to the waves come and join us on Saturday, May 9th, 2009. Weather permitting; the event will take place between 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, with the last boarding at 3:00 pm.
As in previous years, tall ship The Adventuress, along with a number of smaller sailing craft, will welcome budding sailors on board. Come dressed for the weather, as it can be colder on the water. Rides are offered on a first come, first served basis, and vary in length depending on the size of the vessel; trips on The Adventuresslasting up to an hour. Sign-ups begin at 10:00 am in the Boatman’s House, just South of the main Boathouse at Cama.

"Wonders of Iverson" Estuary Field Day will showcase the diverse marine and freshwater habitats of Iverson Spit Preserve, a 120-acre estuary owned by Island County at the southwest corner of Livingston Bay. Family-friendly walks will lead participants through a fascinating array of habitats. Led by WSU Beach Watchers volunteers, along with a biologist with the Stillaguamish tribe who specializes in outreach education, you’ll be able to explore the former salt marsh and learn about the upper tideline area, see where the beavers have gnawed down trees to begin their dam building process, and walk through the aptly-named Hobbit Trail. Then head to the shoreline, where WSU Beach Watchers will show you what marine species live there.
This workshop is sponsored by the WSU Beach Watchers in Island County, Island County Shore Stewards, and the Stillaguamish Tribe.

The Total Experience Gospel Choir was organized in September 1973 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Seattle. The core group represented members of the "Black Experience Gospel Choir" of Roosevelt High School and the Franklin High School Gospel Choir of Seattle. United, the choir became known as "Total Experience Gospel Choir". When the choirs merged, the community's children were also invited to participate. And, participate - they did! The choir's numbers grew to 108 within the first two months, with the youngest person being 8 years old. Today the choir's ages range from 10 to 65. Since its inception, the choir has become known nationally and internationally. Their travels have taken them to 36 contiguous states as well as Hawaii and Alaska - for a total of 38 states. They have performed on 5 continents and in 28 countries.
