Whidbey Island's very own Saratoga Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce the first set of concerts of the expanded 2008-2009 season. Under the musical direction of Maestro Legh W. Burns, the Traveling to Scotland concerts on October 6 and 7 will feature the sounds of the Scottish Highlands and Islands with Mendelssohn's "Hebridean Overture, Op. 26 - Fingal's Cave", and the delightfully engaging "Four Scottish Dances" of Malcolm Arnold.
A highlight of the concert will be special guest soloist, Randolph Kelly, performing the West Coast premiere of Michigan-based composer Braxton Blake's 1997 Viola Concerto (reconstruction based on pieces by J.S. Bach). Mr. Kelly is the principal violist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and will be accompanied by the Saratoga Chamber Orchestra, including his sister, Roxallanne Medley, SCO Concertmaster and local Coupeville resident. "This is a terrific opportunity for us to share the stage and make music together" Medley says. "Our careers have been separate for over 50 years. We are thrilled to finally be playing together, especially on Whidbey Island, a place loved by both of us."

Dissent at Karlson/Gray Gallery
It seems like America has never been so fractious, never have our passions run so high. There’s something in the air--something that is making us a little more argumentative. We asked many of Karlson/Gray’s artists as well as some friends to try to capture the spirit of the times in a show we call Dissent. The result was everything from in-your-face political messages to swirling, troubled landscapes. The show also features works, both on film and in mixed-media, from filmmaker Richard Evans.

Long before the printing press was invented, there were printmakers--artists who worked by hand with wood or stone to produce images. True printmaking is little changed since then, still hand- made by artists using anything from linoleum to acid-etched plates to produce images filled with subtle surprises.
Karlson/Gray has gathered together some of our favorite Northwest
printmakers for our September show, which will showcase the vision,
ingenuity and skill of the practitioners of this age-old art.
The show will feature original hand-made prints on paper, clay and

The Open Door Gallery + Coffee at Historic Bayview Cash Store Exhibits Mark Fessler’s sculpture and Liza vonRosenstiel’s oil paintings November 3-29, 2009. The Opening Reception is November 7th, 5:30pm-8:00pm.
These two artists have taught together since 2002 through Coyote Central creating public works with middle school students in Seattle’s Central District each summer.
Mark Fessler began carving in his grandfather’s shop in northwest Iowa at age ten. Over the years, he was self-taught in stone carving as well. In 1979 he began using cast, forged and fabricated metals in conjunction with wood and stone. Since then there has been an ongoing dialogue of forms and materials with frequent use of the salvaged and reworked. Fessler has taught and exhibited extensively in many regions of the United States.
Liza vonRosenstiel’s oil paintings are inspired by the trees, sky, and water of Whidbey Island, combined with the stories that make up daily life- with all their complexity and mystery. Until two years ago, Liza lived and worked in Seattle and on Whidbey Island for 30 years. Her paintings have been widely exhibited both regionally and nationally.

A Whidbey Island holiday tradition returns to South Whidbey for the fifth year, as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County presents its annual Festival of Trees Gala and Auction. This entertaining formal event, featuring uniquely decorated trees and wreaths for auction, benefits children in the community allowing them to be matched in one-to-one relationships with positive role-models through the nonprofit organization. Nationally, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been the leader in one-to-one mentoring for more than 100 years. On Whidbey Island, the organization has more than 11 years with proven success in creating positive friendships that benefit children, volunteers, families, schools and our entire community. For years, dedicated tree decorators have created unique styles, which have continued to bring joy to the buyers for years to come. The Festivals of Trees is a community celebration designed to brighten the holiday season while brightening the futures of children, organizers said. All funds go directly to children’s services. Other Festival of Tree events include the public tree and wreath viewing from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 5 at the Useless Bay Golf & Country Club in Freeland.

The Total Experience Gospel Choir was organized in September 1973 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Seattle. The core group represented members of the "Black Experience Gospel Choir" of Roosevelt High School and the Franklin High School Gospel Choir of Seattle. United, the choir became known as "Total Experience Gospel Choir". When the choirs merged, the community's children were also invited to participate. And, participate - they did! The choir's numbers grew to 108 within the first two months, with the youngest person being 8 years old. Today the choir's ages range from 10 to 65. Since its inception, the choir has become known nationally and internationally. Their travels have taken them to 36 contiguous states as well as Hawaii and Alaska - for a total of 38 states. They have performed on 5 continents and in 28 countries.

"I spend a lot of time thinking about America, who we are as a people and a culture and a nation, and I have always felt that the theatre is a truly appropriate place to examine these issues, the way David Hare examines what it means to be British, or Brian Friel examines what it means to be Irish.
I am a woman, I am an American, I am a mother, I sometimes write for television, and I sometimes write movies; I play the piano, I knit, I rail at the universe; I am angry, I am sad; I am a comic realist, a misanthrope, and an idealist. There are many ways to categorize me, and my work. But for myself, I would most like to be considered a playwright."

The Brothers Four were pioneers in the musical movement which came to be know as the "folk revival", and of the few groups from those times still performing today, they remain one of the best known and most popular. Their all-acoustic presentation consists of guitars, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, and of course the trademark rich blend of their four voices. Art in the Café welcomes Gayle Watkins. Gayle paints because it challenges her artistic abilities. She started painting in 1980, while living in Kenai, Alaska, just on a whim to see how well she could do. Her favorite paintings are landscapes and seascapes of places that hold personal meaning for her. Her goal is to capture light, create depth and to invite the viewer into her world. She combines the use of brushstrokes and the palette knife to give her paintings a richer look.
Gayle and Island Angel Chocolates invite you to an artist’s reception on Saturday evening, April 3rd from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.The Artist’s Reception is in conjunction with the Langley Art Walk held the first Saturday of each month.
