From the most practical of necessities to the purely fanciful, we have everything you may have forgotten to pack or would like to bring back as a memento of your trip. by RoseAnn Alspektor

Fabulous treasures can be found on Whidbey and Camano Islands in specialty and novelty shops, farmer's markets, festivals, craft fairs and galleries.
Who doesn't love shopping (besides men and small children)? Each town on the islands offers up a distinct mix of shopping with something for everyone. From the most practical of necessities to the purely fanciful, we have everything you may have forgotten to pack or would like to bring back as a memento of your trip.
Shopping on Camano Island has "a little of everything," including charming galleries, neighborhood grocery stores, and blossoming nurseries. Nearby on the mainland, Stanwood and La Conner offer visitors numerous boutiques, antiques, groceries, more galleries, and shops to pick up any "necessities," one might need, just a short drive away.

Directly south of Deception Pass, Oak Harbor is a great jumping off point on Whidbey, and its shopping atmosphere offers real variety. Among the most frequented spots include their expansive beachfront parks and the authentic Dutch Windmill. On the main highway, there are the many national chains of discount stores, office supply, and grocery stores. Leaving Highway 20, and venturing into old downtown on Pioneer Way, Oak Harbor, you'll find intriguing specialty stores. Here you can hunt for the treasures of our many specialty shops, including boutique clothing, do-it-yourself pottery painting, scrapbook supplies, antiques and jewelry. In the surrounding areas of Oak Harbor, you'll find florists and nurseries, large furniture stores, car dealerships, computers, salons, and even two eccentric thrift shops. All complimented with a great array of restaurants and cafes.

Main Street, Coupeville's "commercial corridor" is barely a mile long. Cut in half by Highway 20, one end of Main St. is anchored by the grocery market and lumberyard, and the opposite end by a quaint downtown Coupeville historic waterfront and wharf. Strolling the waterfront district's shops -- filled with gifts, garb, decor, desserts, baubles and books -- is a nostalgic step back in time. Coupeville's vibrant rural character is revealed by cottage industry and unique roadside stands immediately beyond Main Street. Sugar squash, flowers, garlic, berries, antiques and a bit of art are also available between Ebey Road and San de Fuca. With lots to explore -- a museum store, a kitchen shop, florists and garden shops -- there's a treasure for everyone to find.

Eight miles north of Freeland, at the narrowest point of Whidbey Island, is the community of Greenbank. A post office and historic General Store offering food and gas make up the tiny business center. Just south, off Highway 525, you'll find a small vineyard/winery as well as seasonal art and antique shops on Bakke Road. A large selection of rhododendrons is available year round at the 40 acre Meerkerk Gardens on Resort Road. One mile north, along Highway 525, you can sample a large selection of regional wines at the Greenbank Farm tasting room or enjoy a light lunch and local loganberry treats.
